R380 gearbox
The R380 gearbox was fitted to all Land Rover Defenders from 1994 until 2006. This unit was a marked improvement on strength and durability over previous models. The 380 denotes its ability to handle 380Nm of force through the drivetrain. In addition to adding a synchromesh to reverse gear, extra bearings and a steel oil pump were added.
ROW (Rest of the World) spec Defenders were fitted with oil coolers, whereas the European version are without, and as such for most vehicles the R380 tends to run hot. The R380 is identified on the gear lever with the reverse gear being right and back (opposite fifth).
